A Tribute To Eddie Fann

Tribute to a Champion Bowler
by Kevin Lancaster (Chairman: PSCC)

“Oh! Shhh . . . . sherbet! I’m in for it now!” - the thoughts that go through most bowlers’ minds when they are drawn to play against Eddie in a bowls competition. You might ask why? Well, it does not matter how good you play in a tournament, Eddie just plays better!
SA Masters

On the 14th February 2016 Eddie won the SA National Masters Seniors title. This is the most coveted bowls title in South Africa. He also won this event in 2008, 2009 and 2011. He has also won silver and bronze over the years and has been on the podium 9 times in the 12 years he has competed in this tournament. No other bowler in the history of SA Seniors has achieved so much success.

In 2018 Eddie did the impossible. He won the District Open Singles, District Champion of Champions and District Masters. The TRIPLE!!

Eddie was born in Greytown, Natal, in 1945. He moved to the South Coast, the Umzinto area, in 1950, and attended boarding school in Ixopo until 1963. He has always been an avid sportsman, focused on achieving the best. At school he played 1st team in both cricket and rugby.

Eddie’s father built a single rink bowling green on his farm. He and his brother used to play bowls during the day and then challenge their father when he returned in the evenings from work. Who said bowls is for the older generation?

He started his working life at Eskom in 1964, as an apprentice electrician at Congella Power Station. After paying his full board, which cost him R25 per month, he was left with R10 spending money. A wealthy man indeed! He retired from Eskom in 2000 after having spent the last years of his working life testing and commissioning new sub-stations, and working in the costing, payments and material ordering environment.

During his working career, Eddie excelled at cricket, hockey and squash. After a knee injury he quit contact sports and, in 1989, returned to bowls. He played for Eskom in the 12th division the first year, their team coming last. In the following 3 years his team won the 12th, then the 11th, and then the 10th division titles. In 1991 he joined DHSOB and went on to win Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in both the Open and “B” inter district tournaments.

He has played 9 times for the Senior South African side.

When he is not playing bowls, Eddie enjoys fishing, gardening and golf. In his day, he has landed a 35kg sailfish, a 27kg king mackerel and a 27kg salmon.

Eddie is married to Sally and they live happily in Umtentweni.

What an achiever! Port Shepstone Country Club is proud to have him as part of the team!
